Lahnstein Re-Elected Chairman of University’s Board of Governors
The Board of Governors of the University re-elected Prof. Manfred
Lahnstein as its chairman as the first order of business of the
Board’s 32nd Meeting on June 1.
“Thank you for giving me this opportunity,” he said in response to
the vote. “I love my country [Germany], I love Israel,” he declared
movingly.
“Our duty is to look ahead,” he told the Governors. “The microcosm
of the University of Haifa shows what Israel can and wants to be.
Our aim is to consolidate an academic community based on mutual
respect, much more than tolerance.”
Referring to the amendments to the University constitution mandated
by the government and required of all the country’s universities,
the Chairman commented that the end of the amending process would
lead to improved levels of efficiency and “open a new page in the
history of the University.” As for formulating the amendments, he
advised, “Let us do so in a spirit of friendship and commitment.”
The 67-year-old Lahnstein, a former Federal Minister of Finance of
the Federal Republic of Germany, serves as chairman of the board of
trustees of Germany’s Zeit Foundation. He is also president of the
German-Israel Society. He was first elected Chairman of the
University’s Board of Governors in May 2001.
Following a government career, where he rose from Trade Union
Secretary to Head of the Federal Chancellor’s Office and then
Minister, he joined the media giant Bertelsmann. He was a member of
the corporation’s Executive Board and president of its Electronic
Media Division. He has also served as a special representative of
the Board of Bertelsmann, one of the world’s largest publishers.
Lahnstein was born in Erkrath in the Rhineland district of Germany.
He was educated at the University of Cologne, where he received a
degree in Business Administration. The author of numerous articles
and three books, he is active academically as well as in the
business/financial world, serving as Professor for Cultural
Management at the University for Music and Theater in Hamburg.
Among other activities, he is a member of the Trilateral Commission
and serves on the supervisory and advisory boards of Hansa Treuhand,
which deals in containership financing; Korn/Ferry Europe; and
Thalia Theater Hamburg.
The University’s Board of Governors Chairman is married, has two
children, and three grandchildren. His wife Sonja is president of
the German Friends of the University.
