What makes DNA curved, and what for?

DNA curvature is due to atomic details of the heteropolymeric DNA structure.
One simple and practical description of the phenomenon is the dinucleotide step "wedge" approximation.
The DNA curvature plays role in promotors, terminators, and gene regulation in general.
