The
Etruscan civilization first appears in central Italy in the 8th century
BCE. The special significance of its culture lies in the distinctive archaeological
finds, and the fact that the Etruscan language has still not been completely
deciphered. Etruscan culture was the most highly developed in Italy till
Roman times. In spite of a strong Greek influence on their culture, inscription
and other finds indicate that the Etruscans were not originally from Greek
stock.
