Fernando ARRABAL: Legendary Spanish dramatist and
novelist, born in Melilla, Spanish Morocco, but settled in France in the
mid 1950's. His drama is in the tradition of the Theatre of the Absurd. He
coined the term 'Theatre Panique' which was intended to shock the senses,
using sadism and blasphemy to realise its aims. Writes in Spanish, his
work being translated into English by his wife. In 1967 he was charged by
a Spanish court with blasphemy and anti-patriotism. And They Put
Handcuffs on the Flowers (1969) was his first major success in America
(1971) but was banned in France and Sweden. As well as his many plays he
has also published poetry.
