Prague Quadriannalle, June 1999

The Students of the department's Theatre Design section have taken part in a competition organized by AMBI, the Association of Stage Designers in Israel, designed to choose the models and sketches which will represent Israel in the School section of the Prague Quadriannale, the central international exhibition of Theatre design, costume, lighting and architecture held every four years in Prague. A delegation of Israeli design students from The University of Haifa and Tel Aviv University will take part in the opening of the exhibition on Monday, 7 June.

Just what is the Prague Quadrennial, affectionately known to theatre professionals as the 'PQ'? Quite simply, Professor Richard Durst, OISTAT president, describes it in the OISTAT Bulletin, it is the world's most important and prestigious exhibition of designs for the theatre: scenery, costumes, and architecture. For more than thirty years the Czech Republic and the Czech Theatre Institute in Prague have held this exhibition every four years. International prizes are awarded and it is a superb opportunity to observe the finest of theatre design from all over the world.

The PQ is housed in the marvellous Industrial Palace in Prague, situated in a lovely city park just minutes from the heart of this most beautiful of European cities.

Countries from every continent are invited to mount displays of the finest theatrical designs their nations have to offer in the centrepiece of the PQ: the National Exhibits. Featuring work by the most renowned designers in the world, this exhibition is aimed at professionals, students, and others interested in theatre, who can experience here the best of theatre design and architecture.

It is expected that more than forty countries will be represented and their contributions will occupy a huge exhibition space in the Industrial Palace. Also included in the PQ '99 is the Student Design Exhibit, featuring work by students representing their countries as well as that of international theatre schools. These students want to share their ideas with coaches and teachers from around the world. Included in this half of the Industrial Palace is a 'performance space' which will serve as a gathering place for students and professionals - a sharing environment where students can interact with world-famous scenographers and teachers.
