Theatre Students Invited to Take part in the
Annual Party of the Administrative Staff of the University
Acting majors Roni Grinberger, Michael Hayer, and Denis Sapozhnikov were
supposed to take part in the Annual Party of the Administrative Staff of
the University of Haifa, on the Eve of Passover, 29 March 1999. They
prepared Hanoch Levin short satire "The National Library," poking fun at
Israeli vanity, narrow-mindedness and discouteous treatment of others.
The organizers of the program have canceled the performance at one day
notice. The reason given: Levin's satire may "hurt certain feelings."
Department of Theatre Pays Homage to Racine
As part of the world conference on Jean Racine,
organized by the French Department and the International Racine Society,
to mark 300 years to his death, the Department of Theatre is mounted the
first ever Hebrew version of Racine's Britannicus, in the recent,
never yet produced, Hebrew version of Aminadav Dikman. The project was
jointly directed by third year directing majors Yael Hasson-Tirosh and
Akram Khoury, under whose direction the Department's second year acting
majors presented excerpts of Racine's 17th Century tragedy in modern
dress. A bar's wall ("Bar Roma"), a boxing ring, a minimal-dress ring
herald-maid, an Arab ring sweepeer and a noisy and violent bar crowd
served as a setting for presenting selected scenes from the Classicist
tragedy of love, deceit, tyranny, plots and murder in an imaginative
experimental version, designed by third year design student, Ravit Mishli.
The scenes followed each other as consecutive rounds of a boxing match.
There was a single performance of the project, on Thursday, 15 April, 8
pm, at the Haifa Museum Auditorium, 26 Shabbtai Levi Street.
Department of Theatre Students Take Part at a
"Sexual Abuse and Implanted Memory" Conference
Department of Theatre acting majors, under the direction of first year
directing major Hamutal Raban, successfully took part in a conference
on "Child Abuse and Implanted Memory", organized by the faculty of Human
Welfare in May. The students presented excerpts from Michael Colin's
play Anne Weiss. Cast: Roni Grinberger (Anne Weiss), Merav
Kupferberg (Lyn), Hen Shapira (David); Designed by Livnat Opfenberg

Just what is the Prague Quadrennial, affectionately known to theatre
professionals as the 'PQ'? Quite simply, Professor
Richard Durst, OISTAT president, describes it in the OISTAT Bulletin, it is the
world's most important and prestigious exhibition of designs for the
theatre: scenery, costumes, and architecture. For more than thirty years
the Czech Republic and the Czech Theatre Institute in Prague have held
this exhibition every four years. International prizes are awarded and it
is a superb opportunity to observe the finest of theatre design from all
over the world.
Countries from every continent are invited to mount displays of the finest
theatrical designs their nations have to offer in the centrepiece of the
PQ: the National Exhibits. Featuring work by the most renowned designers
in the world, this exhibition is aimed at professionals, students, and
others interested in theatre, who can experience here the best of theatre
design and architecture.
It is expected that more than forty countries will be represented and their contributions will occupy a huge exhibition space in the Industrial Palace. Also included in the PQ '99 is the Student Design Exhibit, featuring work by students representing their countries as well as that of international theatre schools. These students want to share their ideas with coaches and teachers from around the world. Included in this half of the Industrial Palace is a 'performance space' which will serve as a gathering place for students and professionals - a sharing environment where students can interact with world-famous scenographers and teachers.
