Professor Arthur Segal was born in Poland and emigrated to Israel in 1965. He holds degrees from The Hebrew University in Jerusalem . Between 1977 and 1983 he was Lecturer at the Department of Archaeology, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and since 1983 he has been on the faculty of the department of Archaeology of the University of Haifa, where he served as chairman of the department between 1986 and 1989. Between 1988 and 1989 he was chairman of the Zinman Institute of Archaeology at the University of Haifa. Among his scholarly and scientific activities: curator of the Archaeological Colection at the Negev Museum, Be'er Sheva (1980-83), a co-editor of the Classical section of *The New Encyclopedia of Archaeological Excavations in the Holy Land* (1991-93), member of the professional Committee of the Israeli Academy at Sciences in the field of Archaeology (1993-94). Among his numerous activities in archaeological excavations: participation in the exacavations at Kurnub (Mamshit), Megiddo, the southern Wall of the Temple Mount, Jaffa Gate, Northern Sinai, Halutza; conducted excavations in Shivta, the excavation of a small fortress from the end of the 3rd century BC at Sha'ar Ha'amakim near Tiv'on, and a survey of Ancient theatres in Northern Israel. Among his publications: *Town Planning and Architecture in Provincia Arabia* (Oxford, 1988); *The Byzantine City of Shivta (Esbeita), Negev Desert, Israel* (Oxford, 1983); *Theatres in Roman Palestine and Provincia Arabia* (Leiden: E.J.Brill, 1995), and numerous articles in scholarly publications.
