Aliza Shenhar, a former rector of the University of Haifa, served
for three years as the Israeli ambassador to Russia. She is currently on leave
from the University, serving as the President of the Emek Izrael College.
Her main field of research is the uses of folklore and folktales in literature and drama. She has taken over IFA (Israeli Folktale Archives) from its founder, her teacher Professor Dov Noy, and established it at the Faculty of Humanities, The University of Haifa.
In 1991, the Ministry of Education convened a Special Committee, chaired by Professor Aliza Shenhar, to address the problematic nature of Jewish education in secular schools. The committee's views, published in 1994, recommend that Jewish education, should be geared towards pluralism and universalism.
